Grandnephew of propositus Samuel Moore Shute. Chaplain of the Society of the Cincinnati in New Jersey 1884-1898. Chaplain General of the Society of the Cincinnati in 1884. Born in Philadelphia , PA on 24 Jan 1823 and died in Kerfoot, VA on 18 May 1902. University of Pennsylvania BA Degree 1844 and MA Degree 1847. Studied theology in the Seminary of the Reformed Church in Philadelphia. DD Degree from Mercer University, GA 1869. Ordained 1852. Pastor of the Baptist Church in Pemberton, NJ 1853-1856, then the First Baptist Church in Alexandria, VA 1856-1859. Professor of Greek and Latin Languages at Colombian University, Washington, DC from 1859. Transferred to the Chair of English Language and Literature 1865. Resigned in 1895 and elected Professor Emeritus. Author of Manual of Anglo-Saxon, 1867. Member of the Society of Colonial Wars. Married Jane Cecilia Kerfoot.
