First Lieutenant Sam. Shute

Began his service in the Revolutionary War as Private in the 2nd Regiment New Jersey Line 31 Oct 1775. Ensign 26 Aug to Dec 1776. 2nd Lieutenant 11 Sep 1777. 1st Lieutenant 8 Apr 1780. Retained in and last served in Cumming’s New Jersey Continental Battalion from Apr 1783. Served to 3 Nov 1783. Born in Salem County, NJ on 28 Feb 1763 and died in Bridgeton, NJ on 31 Aug 1816. Major of Brigade of Cumberland County, NJ Militia in the War of 1812. Married 1st Hannah Maskell. Married 2nd Sarah Elmer on 2 Apr 1795. [Sources: M; H; (66); (98); (C).]
