Second Lieutenant Robert Wallace Burnet

Grandson of propositus William Burnet. Born in Cincinnati, OH on 20 Jul 1808 and died in Cincinnati, OH on 22 Jul 1898. Served as 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army. Graduate of West Point Military Academy 1829 in the same class with Robert E. Lee and Joseph E. Johnston. Served as 2nd Lieutenant in the 4th US Infantry and served in the Indian Campaigns in the Southern States. Resigned from the military in 1833. During the Civil War he did not served due to ill health, but raised the Burnet Rifles unit which he equipped and personally trained. Among the members of this unit was future President Rutherford B. Hayes. Robert was appointed President of the Western Branch of the US Sanitary Commission throughout the rest of the Civil War.Member of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States. Mr. Burnet was the grandson of William Burnet.
