Served in the Norton-Harjes Ambulance Corps in France in World War I before the United States entered the war. Joined the ROTC of Harvard in Plattsburg, NY in 1918. Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army in World War I. In 1919 was stationed at Camp Grant. In Squadron A, Troop 2, NY National Guard 1919-1923. Harvard College AB Degree 1919. Honorary LLD Degrees from Lawrence University 1960, Juniata College 1961, Yale 1963 and New York University 1963. Assistant Vice-President of the Bank of New York 1930-1937.Vice-President 1937-1945. Chairman of Teachers Insurance Annuity Association in 1945 and President in 1947. Chairman of College Retirement Equities Fund from 1952-1957 (TIAA-CREF). New York State Commission on Pensions 1954-1956. Banker and trustee. President and Chairman of the William T. Grant Foundation from 1946. Chairman of the Investment Committee of the United Nations Pension Fund.Member of the Board of the New York Historical Society; American Geographical Society and New York Society for the Education of the Blind. Member: Saint Andrews Society; Saint Davids Society; and Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States. Member of the Pilgrims. Married Isabel Goodwin on 8 Oct 1921.
