Colonel Nathaniel Scudder, MD

Began his service in the Revolutionary War as Colonel in the 1st Regiment Monmouth County, New Jersey State Militia in 1777. Fought in the Battle of Monmouth. Killed while resisting a British invading party at Black Point near Shrewsbury, NJ on 16 Oct 1781. Born in Huntington, Long Island, NY on 10 May 1733. Died in 1781. Buried in Freehold, NJ. Princeton graduate 1751 and AM Degree 1756. Then studied medicine and was a practicing physician in Manalapan, NJ. Member of the Committee of Observation and Inspection in Monmouth County in Dec 1774. Member of the New Jersey Provincial Congress 1774. Member of the New Jersey State Assembly 1775-1776 and Speaker of the Assembly in 1776. Member of the Continental Congress 1777-1779. The only Member of Congress to be killed in battle during the Revolutionary War. A Signer of the Articles of Confederation 26 Nov 1778. A Founder of the Medical Society of New Jersey in 1766 and President 1770. Trustee of Princeton 1778-1782. Married Isabella Anderson in 1752.
