The Reverend George Thornton Wilmer, Professor, DD

Grandson of propositus Richard Cox. Born in Alexandria, VA on 8 May 1819 and died in Chatham, VA on 9 Sep 1899. Attended Bristol College, then three years at the Seminary of Virginia, graduating in 1843. College of William and Mary DD Degree 1860. Ordained a Deacon. Served his Diaconate at Wilmington, NC at St. James’. Admitted to Priest’s Orders in 1844 and took charge of a parish in the Counties of Botetourt and Roanoke. Rector of Bruton Parish Church, Williamsburg, VA 1856-1859 and 1872-1876.

During the Civil War, Wilmer enlisted as a private in the Virginia 6th Cavalry Regiment 9 Aug 1861, was promoted to Sergeant 19 Sep 1861, then Chaplain 18 Oct 1861. Mustering out on 26 Jul 1862, we continued the War as a Lieutenant in the Virginia Home Guard.

Rector of a parish in Pittsylvania County in 1866. In charge of Bishop Atkinson’s Mission House in Asheville, NC. Rector of Christ Church in Mobile, AL in 1867-1869. Professor of Moral and Intellectual Philosophy and Belles Lettres, College of William and Mary 1869. Professor of Metaphysics and English Literature at the University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee 1876. 1878-1885 performed the duties of Professor of Systemic Divinity, Professor of Metaphysics, Acting Professor of Political Science, and Lecturer on Commerical Law. Married 1st Mary”Peachy” Climer (Gilmer) on 20 Apr 1847. Married 2nd Marianne Barbara Saunders on 8 Oct 1855. Married 3rd Mary Teasdale Cleveland on 28 May 1867. Mr. Wilmer was the grandson of Richard Cox.
