Rear Admiral Charles Henry Baldwin
Grandson of propositus Daniel Baldwin. Born in New York, NY on 3 Sep 1822 and died in New York, NY on 17 Nov 1888. Midshipman US Navy 24 Apr 1839. Past Midshipman 2 Jul 1845. Served on the frigate Congress in the Mexican War. Was in two shore engagements near Mazatlan. Master 17 Jan 1853. Resigned 28 Feb 1854. Acting Lieutenant US Navy 27 Dec 1861. Commander of the steamer Clifton of the Mortar Flotilla at the passage of Forts Jackson and St. Philip below New Orleans 24 Apr 1862 and engaged in the attack on Vicksburg 28 Jun 1862 during the Civil War. Commander 18 Nov 1862. Captain 12 Jun 1869. 1868-1869 served as Fleet Captain in the North Pacific Squadron. Commodore 8 Aug 1876. On 31 Jan 1883 was a Rear Admiral in command of the Mediterranean Squadron. Was the official representative of the United States at the coronation of Alexander III as Emperor of Russia in Moscow in May 1883. Retired list 3 Sep 1884. Married Permelia Tolfree.
