Great grandson of propositus John Ross. President of the Society of the Cincinnati in New Jersey 1883-1896. Born in Emeline Furnace, PA on 17 Feb 1839 and died in Trenton, NJ on 3 Mar 1896. Began his military service in the Civil War as Private in the 25th Pennsylvania Infantry Militia in 1862. Assistant Paymaster and Captains Clerk in the US Navy 1862-1863. On the US Steamer Queen City operating a field howitzer. Assistant Paymaster in the US Navy. Lt. Colonel in the 4th Arkansas Infantry US Volunteers in 1864. Taken prisoner at Clarendon, AR on 24 Jun 1864 and on parole at the end of the war. Brigadier General of the Arkansas Militia. Resigned from service in 1865. Educated at a private school in Philadelphia. St. Stephens College, NY LLD Degree 1895. Studied law. Attorney and member of the Bar in Philadelphia 1860. Delegate to the Constitutional Convention of Arkansas in 1867-1868. Member of the Arkansas Legislature in 1868 and Arkansas Senate 1869. Judge Advocate of Arkansas in 1864. US Consul at Prescott, Canada 1869-1878. General Assistant in the service of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company 1881-1887. Member of the Council of Proprietors of West Jersey. Judge of the New Jersey Court of Errors and Appeals 1894-1896. Author of Institution of the Society of the Cincinnati, Together With the Roll of the Original, Hereditary, and Honorary Members of the Order in New Jersey. Author of The Origin and Signification of Scottish Surnames. Companion member of Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States. Member of the Sons of the Revolution. Married Mary Josephine Abercrombie on 2 Aug 1865.
