Captain James Francis Armstrong

Grandson of propositus James Francis Armstrong. Born in Woodbury, NJ on 20 Nov 1817 and died New Haven, CT on 19 Apr 1873. Midshipman from CT in the US Navy 7 Mar 1832. Served on the frigate Delaware in the Mediterranean. Served on the sloop Loston in the West Indies Squadron in 1837. Past Midshipman 23 Jun 1838. Became a Lieutenant 8 Dec 1842. During the Civil War commanded the steamer Sumpter in the Blockade Squadron in 1861. Commanded the US Steamer ‘State of Georgia’ in the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron 1862-1864. Was engaged in the bombardment of and capture of Fort Macon 25 Apr 1862. Rank of Captain 1862-1864. Commanded the US Steamer ‘San Jacinto’ in the East Gulf Blockading Squadron in 1864.
