Captain James Heard

Captain James Heard

Began his service in the Revolutionary War as Cornet in Lee’s Continental Dragoons of Pulaski’s Legion on 1 Apr 1779. Lieutenant and Regimental Paymaster 1 Feb 1780 and Captain in Mar 1782. Served in Moylan’s 4th Regiment of VA Troops. As a Lieutenant in Colonel Lee’s Legion of Dragoons, was severely wounded in the leg by a saber cut from one of Tarleton’s Dragoons at the Battle of Fort Ninety Six in South Carolina on 10 Jul 1781. Served to the close of war. Born in Woodbridge, NJ in 1762 and died in Middlesex County, NJ on 26 Mar 1831. [Sources: M; H; (66); (98); (C); edit by John Maxwell Heard.
