He began his service in the Revolutionary War as Ensign in the 1st Regiment NJ Line on 7 Nov 1775. 1st Lieutenant on 14 Nov 1775. Captain on 15 Feb 1777. Taken prisoner 1 Feb 1777 and exchanged on 6 Nov 1780. After the Revolution served as Captain in the 1st US Infantry 1784-1790. Resigned from service on 29 Sep 1790.
