Captain Absalom Martin

Captain A. Martin

Began his service in the Revolutionary War as Paymaster in the 4th Regiment NJ Line 23 Nov 1776. Served as 1st Lieutenant in the 1st Regiment New Jersey Line 2 Mar 1777. Regimental Paymaster 1 Feb 1779 to Jun 1783. His arm was broken during the Battle of Elizabethtown. Captain 6 Jan 1783. Served to Apr 1783. Born near Basking Ridge in Sussex County, NJ in 1758, the son of Colonel Ephraim Martin, also a member of the Society, and died in Martin’s Ferry, Belmont County, OH in 1802. The first legal settler in Ohio. Appointed Surveyor from New Jersey to serve with Thomas Hutchins, Geographer of the United States, to make the survey of the “Seven Ranges” in the Northwest Territory in 1785. Made the first survey in the Northwest Territory. Married Catherine Zane. [Sources: M; H; (66); (98); (C).]
