The Honorable John Lambert Cadwalader, LLD

Grandson of propositus Lambert Cadwalader. Born in Trenton, NJ on 17 Nov 1836 and died in New York, NY on 11 Mar 1914. Princeton BA Degree 1856 and MA Degree 1859. Harvard LLB 1860. Princeton LLD 1897. University of Pennsylvania LLD 1908 and LLD from Harvard 1913. Trustee of Princeton from 1901. First Assistant Secretary of State of the United States 1874-1877 under Hamilton Fish. Attorney and member of the firm of Daniel Lord, the oldest continuous law firm in the United States. In 1878 established the firm of Strong and Cadwalader. President of the New York Bar 1906-1907. Helped form the New York Public Library from the Astor and Lenox Libraries and Tilden Trust in 1895. New York Public Library Executive Committee member 1895-1914. President of the New York Public Library 1911-1914. Trustee of the New York Public Library until his death. It was largely through his efforts that the magnificent library at 42nd Street and Fith Avenue was built. Provided the extension to the Free Public Library of Trenton in 1914. Trustee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Trustee of the Carnegie Institution of Washington and the Carnegie Endowment for Peace. Trustee of Princeton University. Trustee of the New York Zoological Society. Author of “Digest of the Published Decisions of the Attorneys-General, and of the Leading Decisions of the Federal Courts, With Reference to International Law Treaties, Etc.”, 1877 in 8 volumes.
