Son of propositus Ebenezer Elmer. Vice-President of the Society of the Cincinnati in New Jersey 1862-1871 and President 1871-1883. Born in Bridgeton, NJ on 3 Feb 1793 and died in Bridgeton, NJ on 11 Mar 1883. Served as a Lieutenant in Artillery in the New Jersey Militia in the War of 1812. Promoted to Brigade Major and Inspector. University of Pennsylvania graduate. Princeton MA Degree 1824 and LLD 1865. Member of the New Jersey General Assembly 1820-1823. Speaker of the Assembly in 1823. Prosecuting Attorney for New Jersey in 1824. Prosecutor of Pleas in Cumberland County, NJ in 1824. US District Attorney for New Jersey 1824-1829. Member of the US Congress from New Jersey 1843-1845. Attorney General of New Jersey 1850-1852.Associate Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court 1852-1859 and 1862-1869. Trustee of Princeton 1829-1864. Author of A Digest of the Laws of New Jersey, 1838;Genealogical and Biographical Account of the Elmer Family, 1860; A History of Cumberland County, New Jersey,1869; History of the Constitution and Government of New Jersey, With Biographical Sketches of the Governors from 1776 to 1845, 1872; and “Eulogium on Garrett D. Wall, Delivered Before theBench and Bar of New York”, 1872. Elmer, New Jersey is named for him. Married Catherine Hay in 1818.
